The Surreal Sea

Whilst looking through the archives, we stumbled across these quirky paintings of fish. 

Louis Renard's surreal illustrations of the marine life of the East Indies, from his 1754 book, "Histoire Naturelle des plus rares curiositez de la mer des Indes". With his extravagantly wild imagination, these hand colored copper engravings are aesthetically beautiful. Whist the drawings themselves are certainly not  accurate, they inspiring. Louis Renard never traveled to the East Indies.
